Abstract
Basic psychological needs encompass the cardinal aspects for the well-being and optimal functioning of individuals, yet it has not been utterly researched when it comes to education, and to a smaller extent when it comes to English teachers. Thus, the purpose of the present dissertation is not placed on carrying out an exhaustive study, since such a task requires more than a single generation to be studied. Although, it aims to contribute by investigating through data collection conducted by means of semi-structured interviews and a comprehensive analysis of case studies the extent to which English teachers in Chile are able to satisfy their basic psychological needs within their professional environment. Therefore, it seeks to provide valuable insights into the experiences of Chilean English in-service and pre-service teachers, shedding light on the factors that hinder the satisfaction of their basic psychological needs. The findings of this study will have important implications for teacher training, curriculum development, and educational policy in Chile, with the potential to enhance the well-being and effectiveness of English teachers, and ultimately, the quality of English language education in the country.
